Alan Shearer has reacted to the news that Newcastle United are now wanting £20 million for Dan Ashworth, who is expected to join Manchester United.
Newcastle might put their Sporting Director on a 20-month gardening leave or seek almost £20 million from their Premier League opponents to shorten it.
Shearer responded to the news on social media with a three-word remark, as Ashworth has already stated that he intends to depart to join the Red Devils.
Shearer pokes fun at Ashworth’s Newcastle departure
Following the news about Ashworth last night, the problem is far from done, as the two teams are unlikely to compromise on how much they respect him.
Man United will be determined that they will not pay Newcastle’s £20 million cost, while Newcastle will see no need to decrease the price anytime soon.
These negotiations may thus last quite some time, and Newcastle should be seeking for a good replacement for the 52-year-old who has put them in a difficult situation.
This kind of sum for a director is rather amazing, but Shearer was quick to make fun at the situation, stating that Newcastle weren’t seeking enough from Man United for Ashworth.
On X, Shearer posted: “Is that all?”
Newcastle hold all the power with Ashworth
When Newcastle first appointed Ashworth as director two years ago, the club made it plain that they would be well covered if something like this happened.
Since the current ownership took over the club, they’ve gotten practically everything right and have obviously been very meticulous and cautious in all of their decisions.
While Shearer was mocking the amount, Newcastle was very wise to establish themselves in such a strong position that they now had no reason to reduce Ashworth’s fee.
It will be fascinating to see how this entire tale unfolds in the next weeks, and who budges first when it comes to negotiating a price.
