Journalist Dean Jones has revealed the two Newcastle United players he believes are more likely to depart than Bruno Guimaraes this summer.
There have been some concerns expressed regarding Bruno’s future, since he has drawn interest from Barcelona and PSG, and many believe he will be lured by a lucrative move elsewhere.
However, Jones told GiveMeSport that Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson are more likely to depart Newcastle than the Brazilian.
January interest to return for Newcastle duo
Newcastle were thought to be close to selling Trippier and Wilson in January after the pair drew attention from some European teams, but Newcastle decided the prices were insufficient.
Bayern Munich had expressed strong interest in Trippier to remedy their right-back concerns, but after two failed bids, they opted to go elsewhere because Newcastle’s demands were too expensive.
Similarly, clubs such as AC Milan and Atletico Madrid were interested in signing Wilson during the winter transfer window, but Newcastle wanted to keep him unless a very significant bid was lodged.
That interest, however, might return in the summer, given both players have only 12 months left on their contracts, and Bruno is still very much in Newcastle’s long-term plans.
“They are planning to sell players. I’m just not sure if they’ll release anybody like Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak. I still believe that if you look for a senior player who will depart, it will be someone like Kieran Trippier or Callum Wilson.
“Those types of players can be moved on and upgraded, but I don’t think that would be the plan with a player like Guimaraes or Isak because finding an upgrade on those players is very difficult.
“While Newcastle need to balance the books, the best way to do that is not to start selling your best assets. They need to find other ways around that.
“I think we will look at a rebuild of sorts in the summer for Newcastle, but I really don’t expect it to be those types of players that find themselves being moved on.”
Newcastle’s can’t afford to lose Bruno
Bruno represents everything that is good about Newcastle; he is what drives the entire team, and he is someone who cannot be replaced no matter how much money they receive in exchange for him.
His release clause is thought to be worth over £100 million, and while it would offer them plenty of room to reinvest in other areas of the team, they’d most likely use that money to locate someone similar to Bruno.
It makes considerably more sense to keep players like Bruno and Alexander Isak and build around them, while releasing other sellable assets in the summer.
It may not be what fans wanted to hear after Trippier and Wilson’s contributions to the club, but Newcastle will need to be more ruthless if they want to prosper.
