BREAKING: Panthers Cut $8.5 Million “Blunder” After Disappointing Season

The Carolina Panthers had one of the NFL’s worst defenses last season and could cut him after a disappointing year. Jackson, who began his career with the Buffalo Bills, signed a two-year, $8.5 million contract with Carolina for the 2024 season. He was brought in to compete for a spot on the team’s open depth chart, but after starting the season on injured reserve, he struggled to make an impact once he returned. In nine games, with three starts, the former Pittsburgh player finished with a PFF grade of 33.8, which would have been the lowest in the league if he had played enough snaps to qualify.

In a recent Bleacher Report article, Dane Jackson was listed as one of three potential cuts for the Panthers. The report highlighted his struggles in coverage, noting that the team could save $3.4 million in cap space by releasing him. Jackson’s time in Carolina may be nearing its end, though he could still provide depth in a more suitable system. While he’s unlikely to earn another $8 million contract, teams like the Saints and Chiefs might bring him in for competition.

“Jackson allowed a 123.6 passer rating when targeted this year. By releasing him, the Panthers could free up $3.4 million in cap space and create room for another cornerback they may trust more.”

The New Orleans Saints are facing salary cap challenges and need to address several roster issues. With limited financial resources, they may look for low-risk, medium-reward players like Jackson to bolster their secondary. While not an ideal starter, he could provide depth for the Saints as they work to improve their defense.

In Kansas City, the Chiefs have two solid cornerbacks in Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, but the depth behind them is a concern. Chamarri Conner is reliable, but Joshua Williams regressed in his second season. With the Chiefs’ cornerback depth lacking, Jackson could offer competition for a backup role, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo might be able to help him improve, given his reputation for developing players.
