Joe Thuney, the Kansas City Chiefs’ star left guard, is unlikely to play in Super Bowl LVIII due to a pectoral injury. Nick Allegretti is expected to replace him in the starting lineup.
Thuney has been sidelined since suffering an injury during the team’s 27-24 division round victory over the Buffalo Bills. Nick Allegretti, who previously filled in for him against the Baltimore Ravens, takes his place.
The Chiefs’ head coach, Andy Reid, praised Allegretti, saying, “Allegretti is a guy who has started for us a number of games, and all the guys look at him like he’s a starter.” So everybody is confident that he will come in and do a good job. Tough child. Not everything is the nicest thing you’ve ever seen, but he’ll fight you till the end. And he’s smart, so that’s a nice combo.”
Allegretti, who was selected by Kansas City in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft, has already appeared in 74 regular-season games, starting 13 of them, and played every snap until the team’s Super Bowl loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season.
Speaking about the forthcoming Super Bowl LVIII with the San Francisco 49ers, Coach Reid indicated that, in addition to Thuney, running back Jerick McKinnon may not play, but this is a remote possibility. “We’ll see,” Reid replied. “I mean, I think it’s a long shot.”
Thuney and McKinnon had not had the opportunity to rehearse prior to the major match. According to ESPN, Thuney leads the way in middle-field blocking, with colleagues Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith rounding out the top four.
Thuney, selected in the 2016 NFL Draft, has appeared in three Super Bowls in a row. Last year, he won his fourth Super Bowl with Humphrey and Smith against the Philadelphia Eagles.
