Nathan Jones, Charlton’s new manager, says he took over at the Valley because he feels the team can “go places”.
Jones had “extensive” discussions with the League One club’s owners, Global Football Partners, before accepting the position, and was persuaded they were in it for the long haul.
Charlton first approached Jones in September after Dean Holden was fired, but he was not ready to return to management at the time after a disastrous term with Southampton.
Southampton fired the 50-year-old in February after losing nine of his 14 games in only 95 days in charge.
Jones is now rested following a sabbatical to spend time with his family, and he is eager to steer Charlton away from the relegation zone.
“I had a number of opportunities to go back in,” said Jones, who started his career as a Charlton Under-21 coach over a decade ago.
“As I previously stated, there were Championship clubs, I had the opportunity to play abroad, and there were other League One clubs – but Charlton holds a special place in my heart, to be honest.
“I know it’s a great club. I understand the current situation, but this is an area with great potential.
“I spoke with the owners. It was a lengthy process since I needed to ensure that the owners were in it for the long run. They desire to do good and take Charlton to previous levels – this is the project I desired.
