The Boston Red Sox are anticipated to make a few trades before deciding on their roster, and with so many big players still available, there is still time to make an impact.
Craig Breslow, the Red Sox’s chief baseball officer, is looking for a starting pitcher and an impact right-handed bat with positional versatility.
While fans are anxiously waiting for those prospective arrivals, the team will continue to add depth throughout the offseason and spring training. The most recent player that Boston is apparently interested in falls into the depth category.
“Free-agent second baseman/left fielder Tony Kemp has drawn interest from the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds, according to sources,” according to FanSided’s Robert Murray.
Kemp hit.209 with 21 extra-base hits, five home runs, 27 RBIs, and a.607 OPS in 124 games for the Oakland Athletics last year. The 32-year-old is also not very impressive defensively.
If Breslow does sign Kemp, it will be to strengthen a middle infield group that is patiently waiting for youngsters like Marcelo Mayer and Nick Yorke to break into the big leagues.
Kemp ranks 100th in strikeout rate and 76th in walk rate, indicating that he has solid at-bats. However, he is not particularly prolific, even when he consistently puts the ball in play.
This is the time of year when every team takes a chance on a plethora of individuals who aren’t particularly exciting but could contribute in the future.
