It is proving to be a quiet transfer deadline day for Newcastle United, but one of the Magpies’ former players could be on his way to the Premier League.
While Newcastle United appear unlikely to make any major signings, Nottingham Forest are having a busy conclusion to the year. They have already signed Giovanni Reyna and Rodrigo Ribeiro, and they are trying to add a custodian.
And the man they appear to be signing has had a difficult time at Newcastle United under Rafa Benitez.
Nottingham Forest agree deal to sign Matz Sels
According to Daily Mail reporter Sami Mokbel, Nottingham Forest has negotiated a deal with French club Strasbourg to recruit Matz Sels. He claims that the Belgian custodian is currently travelling in for a medical.
That is a name that Newcastle United fans will remember, as Benitez brought him to Tyneside after the team was relegated to the Championship in 2016.
Matz Sels had a terrible year with Newcastle
Sels moved to St James’ Park from Gent for roughly £6.5 million, which was a significant investment. It was evident that Benitez planned to make him his first-choice custodian.
And that was the case when the Championship season began, with Sels starting in goal as Newcastle lost 1-0 to Fulham.
Newcastle won the championship that season, but Sels spent the majority of it away from the team. He made 14 games in total and was loaned to Anderlecht following promotion.
In 2018, Newcastle reduced their losses by selling Sels to Strasbourg for £3.5 million. He has made 175 appearances for the French club and could possibly be returning to England.
Nottingham Forest are striving to close a deal, and it appears like they will be successful. That means Newcastle might face Sels again very soon, as Eddie Howe’s team travels to the City Ground on February 10.
