The FA has confirmed the officials for Newcastle United’s FA Cup match against Fulham.
Jarred Gillett has been appointed match referee for Newcastle United’s FA Cup fourth round encounter against Fulham on Saturday evening (kick-off 7pm).
The Australian referee has only officiated one Newcastle game this season, and it sparked some controversy when Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo avoided an early red card for a vicious attack on Anthony Gordon.
Gillett cautioned the £115 million-rated midfielder, but with no VAR in place, he was unable to take another look.
United manager Eddie Howe expressed his displeasure with the challenge, which eventually caused Gordon to withdraw.
“Anthony was sore, it was a horrible challenge on him I thought having reviewed it,” Howe remarked. “Very dissatisfied with the tackle. He’s sore, but we’ll see how he feels today; perhaps he’ll recover quickly.”
The Blues went on to overcome Newcastle 4-2 on penalties to advance to the Carabao Cup semi-finals. Callum Wilson opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge, but a last-minute Kieran Trippier blunder allowed Mykhailo Mudryk to equalize.
Newcastle’s only realistic chance of breaking their long trophy drought this season is the FA Cup, after they were eliminated from both the Carabao Cup and the Champions League in December and dropped to 10th in the Premier League.
Gillett will be assisted by Darren Cann and Mark Scholes, with Tony Harrington on VAR duty. VAR is in use during FA Cup games held in stadiums equipped with the technology.
