Latest Aston Villa news as Wolves defender Matt Doherty talks about whether he should have conceded a penalty for his foul on Ollie Watkins at Molineux
Wolves defender Matt Doherty believes his foul on Ollie Watkins should “never” have resulted in a penalty.
At 1-1, Doherty bumped Watkins in the back while he was through on goal, throwing the Aston Villa striker off balance and prompting him to shoot wide. There have been widespread accusations that Watkins and Villa should have been given penalties, but the referees disagreed.
Doherty has now spoken up about the event. In response to a post on X (previously Twitter) saying Villa should have received a penalty kick, the former Tottenham Hotspur player said, “Never.”
Alan Shearer, the great striker, made his feelings about the event apparent on BBC Match of the Day 2 over the weekend. “If he doesn’t shove him, he’s getting a clear shot at goal,” he told reporters.
“Clearly, he shoves him, enough to knock him off balance.” That is why he misses the target so badly. That should have been a penalty in my opinion.”
He stated about Watkins’ entire performance, “It highlights how important he is to Aston Villa. “He definitely enjoys football, which is why he signed a new contract. He’s doing a fantastic job.”
