Newcastle to hijack a midfielder that has been linked with West Ham United.

Newcastle are set to miss out because West Ham are on the verge of signing Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City, according to the Northern Echo.

The news site stated on January 24 that both clubs were interested in the England international, but the London club won the race to sign him.

The 28-year-old was struggling for game time under Pep Guardiola and will join the Hammers on loan to get it.

Despite Newcastle’s financial advantage from state ownership and high-profile signings, West Ham’s ability to recruit Phillips can be linked to their present European ranking and David Moyes’ magnetic draw.

Playing in the UEFA Europa League allows Phillips to display his abilities on a larger stage.

The allure of European football, as well as the opportunity to be a part of a squad contending on numerous fronts, may be appealing to a player looking for regular playing time.

Furthermore, Moyes has revived the Hammers, making them legitimate challengers in both local and European competitions.

It remains to be seen whether he will stay for the long term, although he has done an outstanding job and most recently won the Conference League.
