Newcastle United to complete first January signing this week

Newcastle is expected to initiate the process of signing Kalvin Phillips this week, and an observer has shared an intriguing perspective on the player’s mindset regarding his situation at Manchester City. Insights into Phillips’ situation at City and the actual financial details of the potential deal are starting to emerge.

The English midfielder has faced significant challenges in securing playing time this season, making only four appearances as a substitute in the Premier League for Manchester City, accumulating a mere 89 minutes on the field. This season mirrors the previous one, where Phillips, following his £42 million transfer from Leeds, struggled to improve his playing time. Contrary to expectations, his situation has either remained stagnant or arguably worsened for the regular England international.

The arrival of Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes from Chelsea and Wolves, respectively, has intensified the competition for Phillips under Pep Guardiola. Despite Rodri’s suspension for three matches, Phillips failed to secure a starting position, prompting Guardiola to deliver a somewhat harsh assessment of the Leeds-born player.

With the European Championships approaching this summer, Phillips recognizes the importance of securing regular playing time. He has acknowledged reaching an agreement with Gareth Southgate that a move is necessary to ensure his place in England’s squad.

Southgate emphasized the significance of playing time for a player’s career, stating, “For any player that’s not playing football, it’s about their careers. England is a consequence of your club, but you also want fulfillment. If you’re in training every day, then you want to play.”

Acknowledging the challenge of competing with world-class players at Manchester City, Southgate hinted at discussions between Phillips, Guardiola, and Txiki Begiristain regarding the best path forward.

Despite limited playing time, there is significant interest in acquiring Phillips’ services, with clubs like Tottenham and Juventus reportedly considering making a move.

However, Juventus faces financial challenges that may complicate funding for the transfer, potentially requiring them to sell players before making any acquisitions. Additionally, a move to London seems unlikely at the moment, as Phillips has recently become a father for the first time, and both he and his partner, Ashleigh, prioritize family.

Given these considerations, a move to stay in the north of England is believed to be Phillips’ preference this month. Consequently, Newcastle is now widely regarded as the favorite to secure his signature, especially as Manchester City has softened its stance on demanding a straight cash sale.

While City initially valued Phillips around £50 million, they are now open to a £6 million loan fee for the player, with the possibility of making the move permanent in the summer. This adjustment in City’s stance makes the potential deal more feasible.

Newcastle, having lost Sandro Tonali to a 10-month ban due to breaches of betting regulations, sees Phillips as a fitting replacement, meeting several criteria for Eddie Howe’s team. The loan fee is well within Newcastle’s financial reach, and the club’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, is expected to initiate contact regarding the potential move.

Rio Ferdinand, Ally McCoist tip Newcastle to seal signing

Discussing Kalvin Phillips’ future, Ally McCoist, a pundit for TNT Sports, believes that a move to bring Phillips to Newcastle would be beneficial for all parties involved. McCoist expresses the opinion that while it would be a positive step for Newcastle, it would be an even more advantageous move for Phillips himself. McCoist notes that he can’t recall a coach or manager explicitly stating that a player is not in their plans. Despite acknowledging Phillips’ positive attributes, McCoist points out that the manager does not see him as a consistent starter in the team, making a move the best option for everyone.

Rio Ferdinand supports McCoist’s viewpoint, emphasizing that, at this stage of Phillips’ career, playing regular games should be the priority. Ferdinand suggests that being part of the squad is valuable, but consistent playing time is crucial for a player’s development. He suggests that Phillips, having had a successful time at Etihad with trophy wins, should now approach the manager and express the desire to move on for the sake of his career.

It’s worth noting that Phillips is under contract with City until June 2028, and during the past 18 months, he has made just 31 appearances for the club.
