Midfielder Elliot Embleton has been recovering from thigh surgery on Wearside sjnce September but his loan spell at Derby County is now officially over
Sunderland have confirmed that Elliot Embleton’s loan term at Derby County has been cut short as he continues to recover from injury. Midfielder Embleton signed a season-long contract with the League One Rams on deadline day in the summer, hoping to receive game time and get back up to speed after missing nine months with a broken leg suffered against Hull City in December 2022.
However, after just two games for Derby, the 24-year-old academy product sustained a catastrophic thigh injury when taking a corner kick in a training session. Embleton required surgery and returned to Wearside to begin his rehabilitation, but he remained on loan at Derby, with the Rams continuing to contribute to his salaries.
However, now that the transfer window is open again, the loan has been canceled early. Sunderland AFC issued a statement confirming that Elliot Embleton’s loan stay at Derby County has ended.
‘The midfielder joined the Rams in September, but after two games, he suffered a thigh injury and underwent surgery before returning to Wearside to finish his recovery. With the January transfer window now open, Embleton has officially returned to the club to begin his recovery to full health.
Derby County made a similar statement, adding: ‘Derby County would like to wish Elliot luck in his future career.’
In the days following Embleton’s injury, Derby manager Paul Warne stated: “He took a set-piece, the fourth corner he had taken, and felt something in his quad, so it’s hugely disappointing.” In my career, I’ve never seen somebody lift anything on a corner, and it was at the end of the session.
