Tony Mowbray could land managerial job with Sunderland’s Championship rivals

Tony Mowbray is a leading candidate for the open managerial position at a struggling Championship club. A month has passed since Mowbray was dismissed from Sunderland, about 18 months following his appointment. During his tenure, the 60-year-old guided the team to the Championship play-offs in their debut season after promotion, showcasing impressive football and posing a threat to prominent clubs in the league.

However, the current season didn’t start as strongly, marked by losses to teams like Huddersfield Town and Plymouth, leading to his departure from Sunderland. Despite this, Mowbray’s time at the club is largely seen as successful, prompting little surprise that he’s being considered for a swift return to the Championship.

According to reports from The Mirror, Mowbray is among the top candidates, alongside Gary Rowett, to fill the vacancy left by Wayne Rooney at Birmingham City. Rooney, the Manchester United legend, controversially joined the Blues when they were in fifth place but was let go after just three months, during which Birmingham City plummeted 16 places in the league standings. As a result, the Midlands club is now seeking a replacement.

According to the article, Mowbray has been a target for a number of clubs since leaving Sunderland, with his passing style and tactics appealing to Birmingham’s owners.

Rowett is also being considered after leaving Millwall four years ago in October. The Lions were 15th in the league table at the time and have remained there ever since.
