Newcastle United now set to recall forgotten man

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United are likely to end Isaac Hayden’s loan stay at Standard Liege.

The midfielder joined the Belgian giants in the summer and has made 11 appearances for the club this season. He is expected to return to Tyneside before joining a Championship club for the second half of the 2023/24 season.

Hayden came close to joining Luton Town over the summer, but a deal to the Hatters fell through, as did a move to Sheffield Wednesday a few days later. It’ll be fascinating to see if the Owls renew their interest in him this month, given reports that he’ll be joining a second-tier club this winter.

The 28-year-old is technically under contract at Newcastle until 2026, but he hasn’t played for the club in almost two years, with his last appearance coming in a 4-0 loss to Manchester City in December 2021.

Speaking about his future just after he sealed a loan move to Liege last year, Hayden had this to say:

“I had options in England, but as I got older I wanted to try something different. I will be 29 at the end of the season. It was the right time for me to try a new championship, a new challenge.

“With no disrespect to the Championship, I think I’m better than that when I’m at my best. I have played for three of the best teams in the division, I know what I can do when I am fit and I preferred to change leagues to continue performing at a high level.

“I was playing every game for Newcastle, got injured and didn’t play again. Things can happen very quickly in football. My focus is only on Standard and we’ll see if one day I want to return to England.”
