The Newcastle boss has set his sights on multiple additions…
Newcastle United are already looking ahead to the January transfer window, following defeats against both Luton Town and Nottingham Forest to round up a disappointing season thus far. To suggest Eddie Howe needs reinforcements would be an understatement. The club is out of the Champions League and eight points below the top four in the Premier League.
Whatever players the Magpies sign in January, they must avoid making the same mistakes they did during the summer transfer window, when they failed to recruit adequate depth. However, Howe is claimed to have highlighted the positions that he needs PIF to enhance this time around.
Newcastle transfer news
Newcastle must get things right in January, with the season likely more than salvageable if the correct players arrive, with Sandro Tonali serving a 10-month ban. Those at St James’ Park have already paid the price for a lack of squad depth, and with injuries piling up, the last thing they need is another setback in the transfer market. They’ll undoubtedly be ones to watch when the window opens in a few days.
According to Luke Edwards of The Telegraph, Howe wants three new signings in January, with a midfielder and a forward being the apparent targets, as well as another goalkeeper. This comes on the heels of Nick Pope’s injury, which could keep him out for the rest of the season, as well as concerns over stand-in Martin Dubravka’s recent form.
Meanwhile, the Magpies still require a replacement for Tonali following his suspension, as well as additional depth in the attacking position. As things stand, Howe has just Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak to depend on, both of whom have had injury setbacks this season. If the manager gets his wish next month, the Magpies may be able to save their season before it’s too late.
Newcastle’s mounting injury problems
While a significant part of their failure has been down to poor recruitment, Newcastle’s injury list hasn’t helped. Howe remarked before of his team’s journey to Anfield on New Year’s Day:
“Of course, we’ve suffered the injuries we’ve had and those players you see aren’t available. I don’t think anyone is coming back in the next few days. It was really good that we had Joelinton return today, he’s been a massive miss for us. And we’ve still got players that are finding their fitness from playing matches, which is never ideal, and there were several players on the pitch today in that respect. We’ve not had it easy, and I think that needs to be acknowledged by me more than anyone else in my reflection of the team.”
