Journalist says Newcastle United could suffer “big blow”

Newcastle United is preparing for the possibility of Manchester United making a move to recruit Dan Ashworth, their sporting director. Journalist Ben Jacobs has provided insights on whether Newcastle has a replacement lined up.

Despite gearing up for the upcoming January transfer window and being prepared for substantial spending under boss Eddie Howe, Newcastle is worried about losing a crucial figure within the organization.

Despite Ashworth’s contentment at Newcastle and the club seeking more than his £1.5 million salary, Manchester United seems inclined to make a formal offer.

Ashworth’s role since joining Newcastle from Brighton has been pivotal and has attracted attention from Manchester United, particularly with incoming shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe eyeing him to manage football operations at Old Trafford.

Insider Dean Jones views Ashworth’s potential departure as a significant loss for Newcastle, recognizing his impact in recruiting new talent. There’s a growing likelihood of Ashworth joining Manchester United due to his connections with INEOS’ Sir Dave Brailsford and Ratcliffe’s team’s high regard for him amidst a substantial investment on the horizon.

 

 

Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT:

“Newcastle are braced for Manchester United making an offer for their sporting director Dan Ashworth, even though he said he was happy at the club in November. Ashworth has a strong relationship with INEOS’ Dave Brailsford.

“Nothing is advanced yet, and it’s unclear what terms are in Ashworth’s contract. If an approach is made, and Ashworth was to accept, Manchester United will be hoping there is no prolonged period of gardening leave.

“It differs from contract to contract. Ashworth, for example, couldn’t join Newcastle immediately from Brighton. As it stands, Newcastle are not looking at a replacement, they are only focused on January.

“I think it’s normal in recruitment to have a succession plan should a senior executive leave or be poached, so I don’t think Newcastle will be too concerned just yet, even though they know losing Ashworth – and to a Champions League rival – would be a big blow.”
