Carlton Palmer believes a transfer to Everton would be more tempting for Che Adams, who is being pursued by Burnley.
On Friday (22 December), the commentator told Football League World that the 27-year-old is “likely to move on” from Southampton in January because his contract expires at the end of the season.
He also stated that a move to the Clarets is unlikely to appeal to the Scotland international due to their Premier League position, with a move to the Toffees being a “different ball game” for the forward.
“Burnley and Vincent Kompany are looking to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window in the attacking department and one player they are keen on is Southampton’s centre-forward Che Adams,” Palmer added.
“Che is nearing the end of his contract and will most likely leave.” There were rumors that he would leave in the summer, with Everton being widely associated with the player, but a deal never materialized.
“Given his proven ability at Premier League level, Che would be on the radar of clubs in the bottom half of the Premier League.” The issue is that Southampton have offered him a new three-year deal and are pushing for promotion to the Championship, whilst Burnley are second from bottom in the Premier League and are now six points from safety.
Che will not want to be relegated again, which would be a fantastic move for Burnley, but I doubt it would appeal to the player. Everton, on the other hand, may be a different story if they return and make an offer for the player.”
It’s not worth it
Everton were keen to recruit Adams during the summer transfer window after Southampton turned down a couple of bids for the forward.
The situation has changed since then, with the Toffees signing Beto from Udinese for £25 million at the end of August.
While the Portuguese attacker had a rough start to life at Goodison Park, he has since scored twice in his past four appearances, giving him a boost of confidence.
Adams’ situation has been much the contrary, with only one Championship goal since scoring in the opening three games of the season.
That means Sean Dyche is unlikely to be enticed to re-sign the Scotsman, since he’s shown little this season to suggest he could improve his striker options.
