All indications suggest that J.J. McCarthy is poised to become the Vikings’ starting quarterback moving forward. The picture became clearer last week when multiple reports confirmed the team had ended their pursuit of Aaron Rodgers.
However, McCarthy shared an intriguing detail with TV personality Kay Adams before his group teed off at the NFLPA Classic in Mayakoba, Mexico. When asked on the Up & Adams Show when he learned he would be the starter, McCarthy admitted, “They haven’t told me.”
“I’m glad they haven’t because I want to earn it every single day,” he added. “I never want it handed to me. It’s a privilege and an opportunity, and I’m just going to make the most of it.”
It’s understandable that the Vikings haven’t officially committed to McCarthy as their starter for next season. Despite being the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and showing promise in training camp, McCarthy is still unproven, having missed his rookie season after tearing his meniscus in an exhibition game.
While the injury was initially a setback, McCarthy found a silver lining. “It was the ultimate blessing because it forced me to slow down,” he said. “For young guys, having a consistent routine is huge. That was the biggest takeaway for me.”

McCarthy also benefited from observing veteran Sam Darnold last season. Darnold had a career resurgence while leading the Vikings to the playoffs, providing McCarthy with valuable insight that could prove useful when he eventually takes over as the starter.
As for his recovery, McCarthy is feeling confident. “I would say I’m 100%,” he said. “I’m just staying consistent with the rehab process and not wavering from it.”
