Toronto Blue Jays infielder is set to become a free agent following the 2025 World Series. After failing to secure a long-term extension this offseason, he is entering the final year of his current contract, which will pay him $28.5 million in 2025. Guerrero, who finished in the top six of AL MVP voting last season, stated that Toronto never came close to offering the extension he was seeking, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. With contract talks put on hold before Spring Training, he has made it clear that he intends to test free agency and will meet with all 30 teams.
According to MLB insider Mike Rodriguez, top veteran and the Blue Jays are making a strong effort to finalize a contract extension before Opening Day. Rodriguez reported on X that both sides are actively negotiating, with discussions involving a potential deal worth over $550 million for a duration of 14 to 15 years.
Following the report, Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins confirmed the team remains open to extending veteran star. According to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, Atkins expressed optimism in both English and Spanish, saying, “Yo tengo esperanza. I have hope. That’s how I feel.”

Guerrero is set to begin his seventh MLB season, all with the Blue Jays. Born in Montreal, the right-handed slugger boasts a career 137 OPS+ and has earned four All-Star selections. Now 26, he is reportedly seeking the largest contract ever for a first baseman. While it’s uncertain if Toronto will meet that demand, GM Ross Atkins reiterated Wednesday that he remains hopeful a deal can be reached.
