Shay Given has predicted who would win tonight’s Carabao Cup quarter-final encounter between Newcastle United and Chelsea.
Both teams will be anxious to get their hands on some silverware, especially following their respective recent troubles.
Shay Given suggested on The Monday Night Club that Newcastle can overcome Chelsea and advance to the League Cup semi-finals.
Given believes Newcastle can win the championship.
Newcastle hasn’t won a domestic trophy since the FA Cup in 1955, and for a club of their magnitude, they’re desperate to get their hands on some silverware soon.
The Carabao Cup would be a perfect place to start with the new long-term project set in place by the new owners, and Newcastle have already beaten two of the tournament’s elite teams.
If Newcastle wins, no one can say they had an easy road, as Given accurately points out, having drawn Manchester City, Manchester United, and now Chelsea.
Their dismal away run is causing concern among many Newcastle fans, but what better way to calm their fears than to win a crucial game in the capital to secure a place in the semi-finals?
When asked if Newcastle could win, Given replied, “I hope so, I’ll be there tomorrow night.”
“The run they’ve had they beat Manchester City at home, Manchester United at Old Trafford and hopefully Newcastle will beat Chelsea tomorrow night.
“If they do win the cup, they’re going to do it the hard way with the draws they’ve had.
“But yes, they can do it and hopefully they can go all the way, it will be worth the wait.”
Chelsea want revenge after humbling defeat
Newcastle won the last time these two clubs faced in the Premier League, which will give them confidence heading into tonight’s match.
However, the Chelsea players will be looking for vengeance and to clear the record after collapsing in the second half of that 4-1 setback just a few weeks ago.
While Newcastle will now have Sven Botman and Dan Burn available for the game, Chelsea has some good news as well, with Christopher Nkunku a possible starter.
The £52 million signing has yet to make an appearance for Chelsea, but he will be eager to make an impression after impressing at RB Leipzig and earning a hefty move to England.
