Vincent Kompany has told his Burnley side they must find a way to perform for the full 90 minutes against the best the Premier League has to offer.
The Clarets dominated the first half against Chelsea, grabbing the lead via Wilson Odobert before being pegged back in terrible circumstances on the stroke of half-time as Raheem Sterling’s cross rebounded off Ameen Al-Dakhil and into the net.
The hosts, though, absolutely disintegrated in the second half, succumbing 4-1 – their seventh defeat in as many outings at Turf Moor.
Even though Chelsea had a shaky start to the season, all five of their games have come against top-tier opposition.
“You play against a team, you can’t underestimate them,” Kompany was quoted as saying.
“When you do team analysis, you realize you have the public narrative and then you have what you see as a coach when you watch other teams.”
“They’re a talented team with a very strong midfield, three midfielders who are comfortable receiving the ball but also work hard off the ball.” You have wingers who can always create something in one-on-one situations, pace up front, and a backline and goalie who are comfortable bringing the ball out.
“It’s a fantastic team.” The fact that they did not receive results at first does not influence what you analyze when you view them.
“We needed to replicate our first-half performance for that, but we weren’t able to do so.” We gifted the goals, as well as the goal conceded in the first half.”
On Saturday, Raheem Sterling was the biggest thorn in Burnley’s side, as the England winger assisted on all four goals.
Whether it was Vitinho beginning at right-back or Connor Roberts coming on later, the Clarets couldn’t get a handle on the 28-year-old.
Kompany was not surprised by Sterling’s influence after playing alongside him for four years at Manchester City.
“He’s a top player,” he remarked of his team’s failure to deal with his former comrade.
