AC Milan’s injury difficulties claimed two more victims this weekend in the form of Noah Okafor and Tommaso Pobega, with the latter’s setback forcing the Rossoneri to alter their January plans.
Injuries have wreaked havoc for Milan this season. According to CalcioMercato.com, 20 of the 27 first-team players have been injured during the 2023-24 season. A sobering figure that explains Stefano Pioli’s use of the Primavera players available to him this season.
While the Diavolo’s defensive injury problems have received a lot of attention, Pioli may be in for another one involving his midfielders. Tommaso Pobega’s position appears to be dire, and he may have to undergo surgery.
The problem could be resolved in January, since two alternatives are now being studied. It would, however, need papering up flaws in other regions.
To begin, Milan may temporarily halt a move for Rade Krunic. The Bosnian’s status with the Rossoneri has fast worsened to the point that he has not participated in the last four games, not even as a substitute. With Pobega’s injury and Ismael Bennacer’s likely call-up to the African Cup of Nations, he may be forced to stay for the time being.
Milan might also postpone the arrival of a new striker, which is the more likely option. Unfortunately, given the present injury situation, a new forward is considered as a luxury more than a necessity, while a new midfielder is seen as a necessity internally.
