Newcastle United star facing imminent suspension after West Ham United incident

Bruno Guimaraes, the latest Newcastle United player to tread a disciplinary tightrope, is on the verge of receiving five yellow cards in the Premier League this season.

In the 17th minute of the Magpies’ 2-2 draw at West Ham United on Sunday, the Brazilian received his fourth yellow card of the season for a tackle on Emerson Palmieri.

Guimaraes has previously received cautions against Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Brentford. Five bookings before matchday 20 result in an automatic one-match ban under Premier League rules.

The Magpies host Crystal Palace at St James’ Park on Saturday, and the 25-year-old faces missing the next game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as games against Arsenal, Bournemouth, and Chelsea.

In better news for United, a potential suspension does not apply to the Champions League or Carabao Cup, allowing him to play against Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United regardless.

Anthony Gordon was forced to miss United’s encounter against West Ham earlier this season due to a ban. In his first seven appearances, the £45 million summer signing received five cautions.

When asked about Gordon’s disciplinary record on Friday, Howe argued that a change in Premier League rules is causing a spike in cautions this season.

“[Gordon] will be disappointed because he doesn’t want to miss any games,” he stated. Knowing Anthony, he’s really passionate about playing and proving his value. I thought he was fantastic at the start of the season, and I thought he was outstanding again on Wednesday [against PSG].

“I believe the rules have changed the booking side of things this year.” There’s very little tolerance on anything, and a yellow card is on the table.

“Whether it’s a pause in attack or whatever, with the new regulations that have come in, I think suspension will come to the forefront more, not just for Anthony and us, but for other clubs as well.”

“It’s something that we will have to deal with but if we can, we’re going to try and minimise those as much as possible.”
