There’s no doubt that Newcastle United deserved to lose yesterday night, but the Magpies should have had a one-man advantage to go with their consolation goal.
Joelinton may have given the Toon Army something to cheer about in the 92nd minute when he fizzed the ball into the back of the net, but Cristian Romero for Tottenham should have been sent off minutes earlier.
Romero, who had just returned from suspension, surged in at Callum Wilson, who was already on the ground. Romero’s leading foot rolled over the top of the ball and onto Wilson’s ankle before kicking out his trailing leg to shin Wilson.
VAR messed up yet again
The ref issued a yellow card while the VAR reviewed the situation and determined that no further action was warranted.
Sky Sports’ broadcasters, as well as all of the pundits in the studio following the game, were completely perplexed by the decision. There weren’t many individuals on social media who agreed with the ref.
Dermot Gallagher, of Sky Sports Ref Watch, claimed today that it didn’t jump out as a red. True, it didn’t happen in real time, but now that he’s seen the replays, how can he stick by his decision? Indeed, pundits Stephen Warnock and Sue Smith were taken aback by what they were hearing.
Dermott Gallagher danced around the issue
“It didn’t strike me as a red card, but many people have said it is.” Isn’t it incredible how popular red card challenges have become? In 14 games, we’ve had 31 red cards.”
Rob Wotton, the host, didn’t hear a proper reaction in Gallagher’s response and pressed him again, pointing out that Romero has two swipes at Wilson.
“That’s what people say; it’s a double take; I’m not sure why people do that; it’s not prudent.” The red cards are piling up, and people demand more and more.”
So we’re no closer to understanding why Dermot Gallagher thinks the official made the correct call, but let’s talk about fans wanting to see players punished for bad fouls as if we’re the problem.
Stephen Warnock went on to claim he was taken aback by what Gallagher said, and we can’t blame him.
That action was clearly deserving of a red card in 2023, even with VAR. We don’t care if it wouldn’t have impacted the outcome; all we want to see is authorities executing their jobs correctly.
