Revealed: The Games Milan goalkeeper Maignan will miss after red card

Mike Maignan, the goalkeeper for AC Milan, was sent off in the game against Genoa last night for a dangerous challenge on Caleb Ekuban in extra time. Fortunately for the Rossoneri, he will only be absent for one match.

Maignan came off his line to block a pass intended for Ekuban, and he obviously received the ball with his head. However, before heading the ball, he struck Ekuban in the chest/throat area with his knee.

Given the intensity of his jump, the red card seemed obvious, and the foul was labeled as’serious foul play’ by VAR. They initially saw the foul as a ‘DOGSO’ (denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity), but immediately altered their views.

According to the regulations for major foul play, Maignan will only be suspended for one game, as indicated by referee expert Luca Marinello on DAZN (via Radio Rossonera). If it had been violent behaviour with intent, the goalkeeper may have been suspended for several games.

Even if he will just miss one game, the next one is against Juventus, which is far from ideal.
