Postecoglou sends ‘clear’ message to Eddie Howe after Tottenham beat Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur easily defeated Newcastle United on Sunday.

Newcastle’s tough week and road struggles continued as Spurs thrashed them 4-1, leaving Eddie Howe’s side with only one Premier League away win all season.

Howe concedes that his team’s inability to replicate their home form on the road is difficult to understand.

Clearly, the injury epidemic cannot be ignored, but putting everything on feels like a very inexpensive way out.

Howe, to his credit, has refused. It would be equally dumb not to say that it plays a role, but Newcastle should have performed better against Everton and Tottenham.

A 7-1 scoreline over two games is hardly a fair representation of a side that wants to compete for a place in the Champions League.

After all, Sunday’s opponents are dealing with a number of injuries as well, but without the added burden of Champions League duty.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou offered a classy remark about Newcastle’s injury crisis following the game.

Speaking after the game, Postecoglou compared the situations of the two clubs.

“It’s no coincidence that now we’re getting some players back, we’re starting to look a little bit stronger,” he said (via Hayters TV).

“I’m not going to speak on Eddie Howe’s behalf but I can see what he’s going through.

“In this league, you have one or two key players out, you’re going to struggle.”

The fact that both Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson returned to the field was maybe the only positive from Sunday’s encounter.

Meanwhile, Sven Botman has made good comments about his homecoming, thus the problem appears to be resolving considerably.
