Newcastle United suspensions: Kieran Trippier and Sean Longstaff are likely to be handed a one-match ban in the Premier League
Right-back for Newcastle United Kieran Trippier continues to walk a disciplinary tightrope ahead of Thursday’s trip to Goodison Park to face Everton (kick-off 7:30pm).
Trippier has not missed a Premier League match for Newcastle since suffering a metatarsal injury during the 2021-22 season, and he is expected to start again versus Everton. However, the 33-year-old is still one booking away from suspension in the Premier League.
Trippier received his fourth league booking in Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Chelsea last month, but avoided a caution against Manchester United the following week. To avoid a ban, he must avoid another yellow card until the trip to Liverpool on January 1, 2024.
Any player who gets booked five times in the first 19 Premier League matches of a club’s season is suspended for one match. Sean Longstaff, like Trippier, is one yellow card away from suspension.
Longstaff received his fourth yellow for dissent following a nasty attack from Kai Havertz in the 1-0 win over Arsenal before the November international break.
The midfielder has since missed Newcastle’s last three games due to injury, and he is a major doubt for the trip to Everton because he has yet to resume full training.
When it comes to potential yellow card bans in Newcastle’s squad, Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton are only two cautions away from a one-match ban. Only Joelinton and Schar are now available, while Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, and Tonali have two bookings each.
Miguel Almiron, Harvey Barnes, Sven Botman, Tino Livramento, Matt Ritchie, Matt Targett, and Callum Wilson have all been booked in the Premier League. Any additional suspensions will put additional burden on Newcastle’s already thin squad.
