Billy Gilmour is developing into a very fine player, according to Roberto De Zerbi, although he was partly to blame for Chelsea’s third goal against Brighton.
Roberto De Zerbi has responded to Chelsea hero Joe Cole’s suggestions that Brighton must improve against counter-attacking teams.
Albion have experienced some notable defeats under the Italian manager since taking over in September 2022, notably a 5-1 home loss to Everton last season and a 3-1 defeat to West Ham this season.
Both teams used a low block to soak up the Seagulls’ pressure before hurting them on the transition. Every tactic has a vulnerability that may be exploited, and now De Zerbi has stated why he takes the approach of throwing a lot of players forward to attempt to score a goal.
“There is only one area the team could improve, I think of the result to Everton last year, West Ham (this season),” Cole remarked on TNT Sports. When the turnovers occur.”
“As you can see, the goal is clear,” the 44-year-old responded. When attacking with three players, it is impossible to concede a goal on the counter-attack; nevertheless, when attacking with numerous players, it is feasible to concede a goal on the counter.
“The defensive side of things is the same. You can concede in free space if you press your opponent man to man. You will score on the counter if you wait in your final 20 metres, and you must decide before the game. What you want to do, who you want to be, and who you want to be.
“Last season, we had four attackers. [Alexis] Mac Allister frequently played as a number 10 so that we could have greater control of the game and the play, but today we have four attackers: Joao Pedro, Ansu Fati, Evan Ferguson, and Danny Welbeck, who are not number 10s. They want to score as soon as they get the ball.”
It will be intriguing to observe how Brentford and Burnley approach their games against Brighton in the next week.
