Newcastle United could welcome back a key player from injury for Thursday’s Premier League trip to Everton.
Sean Longstaff of Newcastle United has hinted at a return from injury.
Longstaff has missed the last three games against Chelsea, PSG, and Manchester United due to an ankle injury suffered in the 2-0 loss to AFC Bournemouth before the international break.
The Magpies’ next Premier League away games are against Everton on Thursday and Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, and the 26-year-old seems to hint at a return to his social media fans.
Longstaff responded to Saturday night’s 1-0 win over Manchester United over 48 hours later on X: “What a performance from the fellas. Mags, I hope you had a good weekend, and I’m looking forward to seeing you on Thursday!”
Newcastle fans, too, assumed Longstaff was implying a quick comeback. “You’re back?” one supporter inquired, while another said, “‘Full focus on Thursday’ is a subtle hint that he’s back.”
Longstaff has made 17 appearances for United this season and scored three goals, the most notable being his strike in the 4-1 Champions League triumph over Paris Saint-Germain in October.
However, the ascent of 17-year-old Lewis Miley suggests that Longstaff may not return to the starting lineup right once.
Miley has been a key member of the same XI that defeated Chelsea and Manchester United in the Premier League and tied 1-1 with PSG in the Champions League last Wednesday.
Speaking about Miley last week, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: “He’s had a taste of high-level football, which can only be a good thing for him.
“If he was a different kind of character I might question that but he’s not and I think he’s able to take everything in his stride. I don’t think he’d be able to give the performances he’s given if he wasn’t capable of doing that.
“For someone so young, he’s got a really good perspective on sport and life. He’s very calm, you wouldn’t know between games how well he’s doing but he’s just the same Lewy. Very respectful and keen to show his qualities.”
