As the Boston Red Sox gear up for the 2025 season, they will do so without three prominent pitchers from last year’s roster. There are quite a few players that are out of Boston, especially considering how talented the top of the Boston farm system is.
3. Rich Hill
Veteran southpaw Rich Hill, 44, rejoined the Red Sox in August 2024 on a minor league deal, marking his fourth stint with the team. Just ten days later, he was called up to the majors to help cover for injuries in the pitching staff. Hill’s long career and wealth of experience proved valuable during his time with Boston. As of March 2025, he remains a free agent, leaving his baseball future uncertain.
2. Nick Pivetta
Right-hander Nick Pivetta, 32, became a free agent on October 31, 2024, after several seasons with the Red Sox. Known for his ability to pitch as both a starter and a reliever, his departure leaves a notable void in Boston’s pitching depth. As of March 2025, Pivetta has not yet signed with another team and is still exploring his options.
1. Kenley Jansen
Veteran closer Kenley Jansen, 37, signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels in February 2025. During the 2024 season with Boston, Jansen recorded 27 saves, raising his career total to 447—the fourth-highest in MLB history. His departure marks a significant shift in the Red Sox bullpen.
To compensate for these losses, the Red Sox have been active in retooling their pitching staff, bringing in arms like Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler to strengthen the rotation and maintain their competitive edge heading into the new season.
