Tony Mowbray was questioned about the possibility of Amad Diallo making a comeback to Sunderland in the upcoming January transfer window. During his press conference before a match, the manager of Sunderland preferred to keep the club’s transfer strategies under wraps.
Amad Diallo arrived at Wearside from Manchester United last summer, initially struggling until he scored his first goal in his ninth appearance for the team. Subsequently, the Ivorian player excelled, scoring 14 goals in the Championship and significantly contributing to Sunderland’s journey to the playoffs.
After his impactful season, Sunderland, among other clubs, expressed interest in securing Amad’s services again for the following season. Speculations arose that he might favor a return to Wearside if he wasn’t part of Old Trafford’s plans.
However, due to an injury sidelining him during pre-season, his full recovery might not happen until January. Nonetheless, reports suggest that Sunderland remains keen on acquiring him as soon as possible, despite Mowbray’s reluctance to disclose details when questioned about their pursuit of the player.
As per Sunderland Echo, the 60-year-old said: “You are asking the wrong person to be honest.
“I don’t know what the plans are for January at the moment, we haven’t really discussed it yet.
“I would imagine if he’s going to be fit he’ll be going off to the Africa Cup of Nations. I don’t think he’d be available for the whole of January.
“Let’s see what the club are thinking of how we are doing by then.”
Is it worth bringing Amad Diallo back to Sunderland?
The Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in the middle of January, and there’s uncertainty regarding Amad Diallo’s potential involvement if he’s still recuperating.
Although securing the midfielder wouldn’t assure immediate availability, our attacking lineup’s current state makes it an obvious decision.
Patrick Roberts has faced considerable challenges without Amad as his partner, and undoubtedly, Amad’s presence would inject the much-needed dynamism we’ve been lacking lately.
Considering we’d only bring him in on loan, it appears to be a risk-free move, especially if he’s enthusiastic about returning. The main concern lies in whether Manchester United intends to retain him, given their limited options in attack presently.
Jadon Sancho remains completely out of the squad, and the combined Premier League goal tally of Antony, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and Facundo Pellistri stands at a mere four goals this season.
