Darren Moore explains how Huddersfield Town ‘nullified’ Sunderland at Stadium of Light

Sunderland lost 2-1 against relegation strugglers Huddersfield Town on Wearside last night

According to Terriers manager Darren Moore, Huddersfield attempted to ‘nullify’ the spaces and prevent ‘dangerous’ Sunderland from getting into their stride at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats were defeated 2-1 by the struggling Yorkshire side, making it back-to-back defeats in five days following their 2-0 defeat at Plymouth on Saturday. Tony Mowbray’s side has now dropped out of the top six and into 11th place in the table.

Moore’s second win in 11 games since taking over in September alleviated their relegation fears marginally, with Huddersfield remaining fourth-bottom but opening up a six-point buffer to the relegation zone.

“It was good to get the three points – we don’t underestimate the three points we got because we have come to the Stadium of Light and we know the fantastic home record they have got here,” said Moore.

“I have a lot fo respect for Tony [Mowbray] and Mark [Venus, Mowbray’s assistant] with the work they are doing here. They are a good team so we had to be resolute with our work off the ball.

“We controlled the areas at the sides of the pitch off the ball, we did that as a group and as a unit, and we did that work early to nullify those spaces and make it difficult for them to get their patterns of play going because we know that once they get those patterns of play going, we have seen how dangerous they are.”

Huddersfield could have gone in front inside the opening five minutes, with Sunderland needing Anthony Patterson to make an excellent save to deny Jaheim Headley. Moore said: “We had a great chance in the first five minutes and credit to the keeper Patto, he pulled off a great save.

“It gave us impetus and showed there would be areas there to exploit. I think, from a slightly critical point of view, we could have done better when those opportunties came, but it was an improvement on where we have been and where we are at.”
