iami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and his wife Nikki Spoelstra have announced their separation in a joint statement on Nov. 29. The two share three children together.
“We have made the difficult yet amicable decision to jointly file to formally end our marriage,” the statement, first published by Miami Herald, began.
The longtime NBA coach and podcast host tied the knot in 2016, and later welcomed three children: sons Santiago, 5, Dante, 3, and daughter Ruby, 1.
They continued, “We are both grateful for our relationship and remain fully committed to co-parenting our children and continuing to make them our shared priority. We appreciate everyone’s support as we move to the next stage of our lives and thank you for respecting our family’s privacy.”
The statement comes two days after Nikki shared an inspiring message for her 36,000 Instagram followers. “Happy Monday! For anyone going through a hard time…. Take a minute (or a bunch of them) and then DOUBLE DOWN ON YOURSELF 💯💯💯” she wrote alongside images of her and her children over the years.
She and Erik have been through some difficult moments in their seven-year marriage. They opened up about their eldest son’s struggle with Burkitt Lymphoma, a type of cancer, last year. He was proclaimed cancer-free last July after undergoing chemotherapy treatments, according to Nikki’s Instagram post.
Nikki completed three years of sobriety in April, saying she’s “gained more than I’ve lost.”
When Erik and Nikki welcomed Santiago in 2018, he opened up about managing work and life.
“I’m going to embrace it, I’m going to enjoy it,” he said of fatherhood, according to the Palm Beach Post. “Parenthood, like everything else, does not (end) when you get a job.” I’m hoping to find a happy medium.
Hopefully I can find a better balance of life-work than I had in my 30s, but I was already going in that direction anyway.”
