Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 Newcastle United: Kylian Mbappe scored a controversial late penalty in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
On Tuesday night, Newcastle United were defeated late in a Champions League group stage match against Paris Saint-Germain.
Alexander Isak’s first-half opening was cancelled out by a 98th-minute Kylian Mbappe penalty, putting PSG in pole position to beat Newcastle to the last-16 with a game to spare. The penalty was given when Ousmane Dembele’s cross rebounded off Tino Livramento’s chest and struck his elbow.
Referee Szymon Marciniak reviewed the tape after a VAR check before pointing to the penalty spot. And Mbappe quickly equalized to make it 1-1.
Eddie Howe acknowledged he didn’t think it was a penalty and had to contain his tongue when asked about the ruling. To add salt to Newcastle’s wounds, the decision to award PSG a penalty looks to contradict UEFA guidance from April 2023.
A UEFA statement issued last season read: “In their guidelines for next season, the Board recommends that UEFA should clarify that no handball offence should be called on a player if the ball is previously deflected from his own body and, in particular, when the ball does not go toward the goal.”
As a result, Newcastle must defeat AC Milan in their final group stage match at St James’ Park and hope that PSG fails to win against Borussia Dortmund next month. Since the 2011-12 season, the Ligue 1 club has not failed to advance from the Champions League group stages.
