Breaking: Done Deal!! New York Rangers Officially Announce Another Major Signing

Amid a flurry of moves at the trade deadline, the New York Rangers have secured defenseman with a two-year contract extension worth $3.1 million in total. The deal carries an annual cap hit of $1.55 million and runs through the 2026-27 season.

The 26-year-old blueliner has played for the Boston Bruins, Anaheim Ducks, and Rangers over his seven-year NHL career. This season, he has recorded two goals and eight assists for 10 points in 35 games while posting a 42.4 Corsi for percentage and a relative Corsi of -9.2.

Originally from Joensuu, Finland, Vaakanainen was selected 18th overall by the Bruins in the 2017 NHL Draft. Urho Vaakanainen later joined the Rangers as part of the trade that sent former captain Jacob Trouba to Anaheim. Internationally, he has represented Finland on multiple occasions, including winning gold at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship and competing in the most recent Four Nations Faceoff.

Impact of the Signing

This move bolsters the Rangers’ defensive depth, as general manager Chris Drury continues to solidify the third pairing. Prior to the deadline, New York also extended Will Borgen, signaling their focus on stabilizing the blue line.

While Vaakanainen isn’t known for his offensive contributions, he has been a reliable presence on defense. The Rangers entered the season as a Stanley Cup contender, but inconsistent performances have left them battling for a playoff spot.

Though not a high-profile signing, this extension provides cost-effective depth and flexibility for the Rangers, as the contract remains moveable if needed.
