Mason Burstow ‘should’ return this week, according to Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray.
Sunderland lost 2-0 at Plymouth Argyle without their striker over the weekend.
Burstow, 20, is on loan from Chelsea to the Black Cats and is set to return to training ahead of Wednesday’s game against Huddersfield Town.
According to the Sunderland Echo, Mowbray has issued an injury update on the youngster: “Mason just had a little injury but he should be fine to train with us on Monday, so he should be available on Wednesday.”

Sunderland moved quickly in the last transfer window to secure the forward temporarily, aiming to strengthen their attacking lineup. Burstow, since joining, has played in 10 matches across various competitions for the Championship team but is yet to score his first goal.
Back in 2022, Chelsea acquired Burstow as a promising talent. He has participated in three matches for the Premier League giants and signed a contract at Stamford Bridge that extends until 2025. The Blues allowed him to go out on loan to gain experience in the Football League when Sunderland showed interest.
Burstow initially began his career in non-league football, playing for Maidstone United and Welling United before moving to Charlton Athletic in 2020. His time at Charlton involved 23 appearances and six goals before he was recruited by Chelsea.
Sunderland currently hold the 9th spot in the standings, trailing two points behind the play-off positions, following their recent loss against the Pilgrims. Looking ahead, Mowbray will be eager for a strong response from his team in the upcoming match against Huddersfield, followed by an away game against Millwall at The Den.
