The Cincinnati Reds made significant moves this offseason, starting with the hiring of legendary manager Terry Francona. They are also set to benefit from the return of key players like Matt McLain and Christian Encarnacion-Strand, who were sidelined by injuries. Additionally, Cincinnati strengthened its roster by acquiring Gavin Lux, Austin Hays, and Brady Singer.
Earlier this winter, the Reds reportedly explored a trade for Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr., though negotiations ultimately fell through. However, they could revisit their pursuit of Robert as the season approaches. Meanwhile, utility player Spencer Steer might begin the 2025 season on the injured list after receiving a cortisone injection for lingering shoulder soreness. If he is unavailable, the Reds would have a noticeable gap in their lineup—one that Robert could fill in a major way. Steer is expected to be a key right-handed bat in the outfield while also providing infield versatility, whereas Robert would immediately become Cincinnati’s top right-handed hitting outfielder.

Landing Robert would be a significant challenge, as Chicago’s asking price is steep. Any potential deal would likely center around top Reds prospect Edwin Arroyo, with pitching prospects Chase Petty, Connor Phillips, and Julian Aguiar also being considered. Cincinnati might even have to part with pitchers Graham Ashcraft or Andrew Abbott to get a deal done. Given the high cost, few teams have seriously pursued Robert, and it remains unclear whether the Reds will meet the White Sox’s demands. Still, Robert would be an ideal addition to Cincinnati’s roster, making him a player to watch as the season nears.
