Breaking News: Avs Drops Alarming Update Regarding Gabriel Landeskog as Trade Deadline Approaches

With the 2025 trade deadline approaching on March 7, the Colorado Avalanche face a critical decision on whether to make moves to strengthen their roster. A key factor in their approach is the uncertain status of top star, whose potential return remains a question mark. If they make trades for players with longer-term contracts, it could indicate they are preparing for the possibility that he won’t return this season—or perhaps ever.

The worst-case scenario for the Avalanche is that he is unable to make a comeback. The team has spent two and a half years working toward his return following a serious knee injury, but at some point, they may have to move forward without him. While fans remain loyal to their captain, the reality is that even if he does return, he will need significant time to regain full “hockey condition”—adjusting to the speed, physicality, and demands of NHL play.

The Avalanche roster has undergone major changes since Landeskog last played. While Nathan MacKinnon remains the leader of the forward group, Landeskog has yet to take the ice with newer additions like Miles Wood and Jonathan Drouin. Meanwhile, Mikko Rantanen was traded to Carolina and could potentially move again within the division.

Despite Landeskog and the team’s determination to make his return work, time is not on their side. Whether the Avalanche make a big move at the deadline may depend on how much faith they still have in their captain’s ability to rejoin the lineup.

The Colorado Avalanche and their current cap space situation

The Avalanche currently have just over $4.7 million in cap space, which gives them some flexibility for minor roster moves. However, if they do make a trade, they could free up even more space. Many have speculated that Casey Mittelstadt and his $5.75 million cap hit could be moved to make room for more affordable replacements.

Fortunately, one of Colorado’s biggest concerns—goaltending—was addressed earlier in the season. The additions of Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood have provided much-needed stability compared to the struggles of Alexandar Georgiev and Justus Annunen.

Navigating the salary cap has been a challenge for the Avalanche, especially given their injury issues this season. Ideally, they can find one or two players who not only fit their system but also come at a low cost and have the potential to contribute long-term. As the trade deadline approaches, the team’s strategy should become clearer.
