The Boston Red Sox made a major offseason acquisition by trading four minor league prospects to the Chicago White Sox for left-handed starter. After an impressive season with a struggling White Sox team, Boston saw his potential to become a dominant force in the American League.
He made his Red Sox debut against the Toronto Blue Jays, delivering a solid performance. He pitched 1.2 innings, throwing 27 pitches—just shy of his 30-pitch limit. Despite allowing three hits and a walk, he struck out four batters, making an immediate impact.
The game also featured the Red Sox debut of infielder, who had a strong showing with three hits, including his first home run in a Boston uniform. Bregman was impressed by Crochet’s performance on the mound.
“He looked great,” Bregman said, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. “Punched out the side in the first. His stuff is electric. Just in facing him over the past few years, he’s been fun to watch and difficult to face. Glad I’m on his team.”
Red Sox are betting that Crochet, Bregman will take on key roles in 2025
The Red Sox have struggled with consistency over the past two seasons, starting strong but fading in the second half. Though they showed improvement in 2024, finishing with an 81-81 record, they were never true playoff contenders.
With the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles both reaching the postseason last year, Boston made key offseason moves to better compete for the American League East crown.
Along with newcomers Alex Bregman and Garrett Crochet, regulars Triston Casas, Trevor Story, and Ceddanne Rafaela were in the lineup under manager Alex Cora. Bregman noted the excitement among his new teammates as they prepare for the season.
“I think a lot of guys are super pumped to get underway,” Bregman said. “We’re all extremely excited about this season. We know we’ve got a lot of work to do, and we have a lot of preparation here in Florida before heading into the season, but it just felt nice. And I think everybody had a smile on their face today when they got here, because they knew they were in the lineup.”
