Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United team will have to make at least one change against Borussia Dortmund.
That’s because the Magpies suffered yet another injury during Saturday’s dramatic 1-0 win over Arsenal.
Dan Burn was forced off at halftime due to a back injury, and Howe has provided a discouraging update on the 31-year-old. Burn will be out for a few months, according to Howe, ahead of the Dortmund game.
This is a huge blow for Newcastle, who are already short-handed.
It means that the Newcastle defense will be changed when the Magpies face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with Tino Livramento the favourite to come into the side.
Howe hints Livramento could start for Newcastle against Dortmund
Howe spoke to the media ahead of the game against Dortmund and praised Livramento’s recent efforts.
“Tino is a very good player,” he stated.
“He demonstrated that coming into a critical moment on Saturday, when the game was evenly poised and the atmosphere was electric.”
“He was playing against a very good opponent, and he came on and performed admirably once more.” We will make team selection decisions based on all of the information we have.”
Another chance for Livramento to shine for Newcastle
At halftime against Arsenal, Livramento replaced Burn, with Kieran Trippier shifting to left-back.
Rather than starting Lewis Hall in the Champions League, that appears to be the change Howe will make against Dortmund.
It’s another chance for Livramento to show what he’s capable of. The 20-year-old has already outperformed Manchester City, Manchester United, and Arsenal, so he has no reason to fear Dortmund.
Champions League nights were a big reason Livramento joined Newcastle, and now he could start his first major European game.
After defeating Gabriel Martinelli on Saturday, he deserves this chance.
Despite only appearing on a sporadic basis, Livramento has had a promising start to his Newcastle career, and he could now be in line for an extended run in the side following Burn’s injury.
It’s a shame to lose Burn, but Howe will be confident that Livramento can step in and continue to show why he cost as much as £32 million this summer.
