Despite the struggles, there is optimism for the future. The Panthers have regained confidence in quarterback Bryce Young after early-season turmoil surrounding his benching. The team has already made significant investments in improving the offensive line and boasts promising young playmakers like first-round pick Xavier Legette and running back Chuba Hubbard. Additionally, Carolina is hopeful that rookie Jonathon Brooks, recovering from an ACL injury, will develop into a key contributor.
To take the next step, the Panthers need to surround Young with more weapons to build a formidable offense in 2025.
However, the defense remains a concern. While the unit features standout players like defensive lineman Derrick Brown and cornerback Jaycee Horn, there are glaring weaknesses elsewhere. This is surprising given that Carolina devoted every pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to defensive players.
As a result, the Panthers are expected to prioritize bolstering their defense in the 2025 offseason. This could involve significant roster changes, including parting ways with players who no longer fit the team’s long-term plans.
One potential surprise departure could be veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney.
Could the Panthers Move on from Jadeveon Clowney?
Clowney, a well-known name on Carolina’s roster, remains one of their most established defenders under contract for 2025. However, he could become a cap casualty this offseason.
Throughout his 11-year career, Clowney has been a disruptive force wherever he has played. The Panthers signed him in 2024, hoping he could replicate his 9.5-sack season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023. Unfortunately, his production in Carolina was less impactful. While he recorded 46 tackles and 5.5 sacks, he did not elevate the defense as the team had hoped.
Releasing Clowney would free up $7.75 million in cap space. While that may not seem like a massive figure, Carolina enters the offseason with just $20.87 million in available cap space. Increasing that to nearly $29 million could provide the flexibility needed to target key free agents in March.
If the Panthers decide to move on from Clowney, they must have a replacement plan in place. Fortunately, they have options.
How Could Carolina Replace Clowney?
The Panthers already have DJ Wonnum on the roster. Though not as accomplished as Clowney, he is younger and on an affordable contract, providing some stability at the position.
In free agency, Carolina could target edge rushers within their budget. High-profile names like Josh Sweat may be out of reach, but more affordable options such as Malcolm Koonce, Baron Browning, Azeez Ojulari, or Josh Uche could be viable additions.
The Panthers could also turn to the 2025 NFL Draft, where they hold nine picks, including the eighth overall selection. Given the depth of this year’s edge rusher class, they could likely land a quality pass rusher even in the second round.
Ultimately, while Clowney was a solid contributor in 2024, banking on him to deliver the same level of production in 2025 may not be a wise gamble. The Panthers have loftier ambitions for the upcoming season, and moving on from the veteran pass rusher could align better with their long-term vision.
