Red Sox In Hot Pursuit Of Two Key Stars; Insider Confirms Significant Trade Update

While Top Star is reportedly interested in joining the Red Sox, a trade to Boston doesn’t seem highly probable.

Top Star is considered more of a backup option for Boston, which is reportedly a finalist in the pursuit of Alex Bregman. Even if the Red Sox and Cardinals were to reach an agreement, Arenado’s no-trade clause would need to be waived for him to land at Fenway Park.

One major hurdle in negotiations? The two teams reportedly disagree on a key financial aspect of the deal.

“The Red Sox have yet to bite, not only because of the consequences of such a move — (Rafael) Devers shifting to a near-full-time designated hitter role — but because the Cardinals have not budged enough on the money they’re willing to send with the remaining three years and $64 million on Arenado’s contract,”

Passan added that Boston’s interest in Arenado would remain “iffy” unless St. Louis covers more of his remaining salary. This stance is understandable, given that Arenado is 33, coming off a down season, and isn’t an ideal fit with the Red Sox’s current roster.

Additionally, the Cardinals are reportedly “content to run it back” with Arenado, despite months of trade rumors. As a result, the star third baseman’s offseason saga might end without much drama.
