Blockbuster: Sabres Completes Huge Deal For Another Highly Experienced Star

Top star was a player Sabres fans were eager about when he was acquired at the 2022 trade deadline. Prior to the 2022-23 season, he had signed a three-year, $9 million contract with the Minnesota Wild. Since joining Buffalo, his journey has been a bit of a mixed bag.

After his arrival during the 2022-23 season, he managed to score a few goals but was largely ineffective in his 17 games. However, he bounced back the following season, posting 10 goals, 18 assists, and a +11 rating over 67 games, showing signs of promise. This season, it looked like he’d maintain that momentum, but injuries have limited him to just 20 games. For someone earning $3 million annually, his production hasn’t been up to par, raising concerns that he might be a one-season wonder for the Sabres. The big question now is whether Buffalo can get any value in return if they decide to move him at the trade deadline.

While it’s unclear how much the Sabres could fetch for Greenway, they could likely secure some draft picks and possibly a prospect for the 27-year-old. He still has plenty of skill, but with his contract expiring at the end of the season and unrestricted free agency looming, trading him to free up cap space seems like the smart move. Here are two potential landing spots where Greenway could be a good fit.

Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks could be an ideal landing spot for Jordan Greenway, as they currently have the most available cap space in the league. Their rebuild has been progressing steadily, and with the strides they’ve made this season, they could be a playoff contender within the next couple of years. Adding a veteran presence like Greenway could bolster their struggling offense, which has averaged just 2.48 goals per game.

For the Sabres, a trade with Anaheim could yield a 4th and 6th-round pick in return—assets that would be valuable for future trades. From the Ducks’ perspective, they’d gain an experienced forward to support their young core, and they’d have the option to re-sign Greenway in the offseason on a more team-friendly deal, making it a win-win for both sides.

Calgary Flames

Another potential destination for Jordan Greenway is the Calgary Flames, who have already been active at the trade deadline, acquiring Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee from the Flyers. Calgary is focused on boosting their offensive production, and Greenway could be a solid addition to their third or fourth line, depending on where he fits best. With the Flames averaging 2.64 goals per game, they’ll need more firepower to stay competitive in the race for a wild card spot.

In terms of return, the Sabres could explore a couple of options. They might secure a combination of mid-round draft picks, such as a 4th and 5th-rounder, or they could target a prospect or AHL player like Dryden Hunt. Hunt, a journeyman forward, has made an impact wherever he’s played, bringing grit and a physical edge—qualities the Sabres currently lack. With 51 career NHL points over eight seasons, Hunt would be a valuable depth piece, capable of contributing as a reserve or fourth-liner.

While Greenway still has plenty of talent, it’s becoming clear that his skill set isn’t the right fit in Buffalo. Moving on from him would allow the Sabres to free up cap space for future trades or free-agent acquisitions, positioning them better for long-term success.
