Analyst: Yankees Are ‘Heavy Favorites’ to Sign Former 41-Home Run Slugger

The New York Yankees have made significant moves to rebuild their roster following Juan Soto’s departure in free agency.

They bolstered their pitching by signing starter Max Fried and trading for closer Devin Williams. They then addressed their lineup by acquiring Cody Bellinger via trade and signing Paul Goldschmidt. Despite these additions, the Yankees still need to solidify their infield, with the choice between a third baseman or a second baseman hinging on Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s role.

Zach Pressnell of Newsweek suggests the Yankees are likely to pursue star third baseman. Pressnell believes he could end up in the Bronx.

“General manager Brian Cashman opted for a more cost-effective solution at first base,” Pressnell wrote, referencing the decision to pass on Pete Alonso. “Keeping first base affordable allows the Yankees to allocate more resources to upgrading third base, where they have a pressing need. Who is the best available option?

“Astros veteran third baseman Alex Bregman. This offseason, Bregman has been consistently linked to the Yankees,” Pressnell added. “Initially, Houston was considered the frontrunner to retain him, but after signing Walker, they seem to be out of the running.”

The Yankees have reportedly been in contact with Bregman during free agency. His addition would provide a middle-of-the-order bat and strong defense at third base, making him an excellent fit for New York’s roster.

Analyst Calls Yankees ‘Heavy Favorite’ to Sign Bregman

With the Yankees saving money by not making a big splash at first base, Zach Pressnell of Newsweek believes New York is now the favorite to sign Alex Bregman in free agency.

Bregman, one of the top hitters available, seems like an ideal fit for the Yankees. “For New York, the long-time Astro would address the roster’s most significant weakness,” Pressnell wrote. “Bregman could take over at third base, allowing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to move to his natural position at second base. This combination would represent a massive upgrade, particularly over former Yankee Gleyber Torres.” Pressnell emphasized that the Yankees should now be viewed as the frontrunners for Bregman.

In 2024, Bregman hit .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs for the Houston Astros. His career highs include 41 home runs and 119 RBIs in 2019. A two-time All-Star, Bregman also boasts a Silver Slugger and Gold Glove on his resume, making him a valuable addition for a Yankees team seeking to strengthen its infield and lineup.

What is Bregman Expected to Get in Free Agency?

Alex Bregman is among the top free-agent hitters available this offseason and is anticipated to secure a multi-year contract. According to MLB Trade Rumors‘ annual Top 50 free agent predictions, Bregman is projected to land a seven-year, $182 million deal.

“Bregman isn’t entering free agency at the most opportune time, as he’ll turn 31 next season,” the outlet noted. “While that’s not ‘old’ for a free agent, it will likely cap his deal at around seven years. Whether he secures a deal of seven years or longer remains uncertain, but he should receive offers for at least six years. Matt Chapman just signed a six-year, $151 million extension at age 32, setting a benchmark. Bregman, being younger and a more consistent offensive player, is expected to surpass that deal.”

A cornerstone of the Astros’ success, Bregman played a pivotal role in their 2017 and 2022 World Series victories. His combination of consistent offense and proven postseason experience makes him a highly coveted addition for teams looking to contend.
