The St. Louis Cardinals are actively seeking a trade partner to take on Nolan Arenado’s contract, which still has $52 million remaining. As teams begin to solidify their rosters, the trade market is becoming increasingly challenging. However, the Philadelphia Phillies could be a potential destination for Arenado. While the Phillies have reportedly engaged in discussions with other teams about Alec Bohm, they are not actively shopping their third baseman.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller speculated on a potential trade involving the Cardinals and Phillies, suggesting a swap of third basemen. “The Philadelphia Phillies were one of the six teams on Arenado’s original list of preferred destinations,” Miller noted. For such a trade to work, Bohm would likely need to be part of the deal, potentially as part of a rare three-team trade.
Miller proposed the following scenario: “St. Louis trades 3B Nolan Arenado to Philadelphia; Philadelphia sends 3B Alec Bohm to Seattle; Seattle trades SS Colt Emerson (ranked No. 35 overall by Joel Reuter) to St. Louis.”
This deal would benefit all three teams. The Phillies would upgrade at third base to strengthen their contention chances, the Cardinals would offload Arenado’s contract while acquiring a promising prospect, and the Mariners would gain much-needed offensive power. For the Cardinals, this trade could signal the start of a rebuild, though they would still retain a strong third baseman to serve as a foundation for their future plans.
