When the NCAA transfer portal opened two weeks ago, several Virginia Tech players entered, causing alarm among fans. Even worse, over a week later, the Hokies still hadn’t added anyone to the portal despite hosting many players on official visits.
That all changed this week, starting with Sherrod Covil, a Virginia native and former Clemson safety. Tech earned commitments from running back Terion Stewart (Bowling Green), running back Marcellous Hawkins (Central Missouri), and defensive lineman Jahzari Priester (Hampton).
On Saturday, head coach Brent Pry maintained his hot streak by adding two possible starters to the secondary, beginning with former East Carolina cornerback Isaiah Brown-Murray.
Brown-Murray, who is 5 feet 10 and weighs 191 pounds, is a Cornelius, North Carolina native. He redshirted in 2022 after being a three-star recruit and starting 21 of 24 games in the previous two seasons. Brown-Murray had 69 tackles, one interception, and eight passes defended for the Pirates.
The Hokies lost starting cornerbacks Mansoor Delane (transfer portal/LSU) and Dorian Strong (NFL draft), and Brown-Murray is now the frontrunner to play opposite Dante Lovett in 2025. The Hokies are probably not done adding cornerbacks.
Brown-Murray has two years of eligibility left.
Later on Saturday, Rice safety Tyson Flowers confirmed that he was also going to Blacksburg.
Flowers, who is 5 feet 11 and weighs 211 pounds, is a Fort Worth, Texas native. He played three games as a freshman in 2022 before redshirting.
In 2023, he appeared in 11 games and made 25 tackles, two for loss and one sack. He made his first two professional starts in 2023.
Flowers started all ten of his games in 2024. He recorded 38 tackles, three for loss, and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.
The Hokies lost safety Jalen Stroman (transfer portal), Jaylen Jones (graduate), and Mose Phillips (transfer portal/Vanderbilt), therefore the position became a focus in the portal. Covil and Flowers will immediately fight with rising sophomore Quentin Reddish for the top spot on Virginia Tech’s safety depth chart.
Welcome home. Isaiah and Tyson.
