The New York Yankees are reportedly in a tight competition to sign free-agent first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, with four other teams also in contention. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, Washington Nationals, and New York Mets are all pursuing the former MVP.
Recent speculation surrounding Goldschmidt has intensified over the past day. With Christian Walker no longer available, the Yankees see Goldschmidt as a strong alternative.
Yankees’ Pursuit of Goldschmidt
Looking to address their first base vacancy, the Yankees view Goldschmidt as a compelling short-term solution. After declining Anthony Rizzo’s club option, the team is in need of a dependable veteran to stabilize the infield. Goldschmidt’s combination of offensive ability and solid defense makes him a prime candidate.
In 2024, Goldschmidt appeared in 150 games, posting a .245/.302/.414 slash line with 22 home runs and 65 RBIs. While his production has declined from his MVP-winning form in 2022, he remains a consistent hitter and a valuable clubhouse leader.
Competition Intensifies
The Yankees face stiff competition in their pursuit of Paul Goldschmidt. The Seattle Mariners are eager to add offensive firepower to bolster their young core, and Goldschmidt’s steady production could provide much-needed stability to their lineup.
The San Francisco Giants, known for strategically acquiring experienced players, see Goldschmidt as a potential upgrade to their infield and lineup depth. Reports suggest they might be open to trading LaMonte Wade Jr., a versatile player who could fit well with the Yankees.
The Washington Nationals, despite being in a rebuilding phase, are reportedly interested in Goldschmidt to bring veteran leadership to their developing roster. Meanwhile, the New York Mets, who have made significant investments in their team, may consider Goldschmidt a cost-effective alternative to Pete Alonso, who is likely to seek a long-term, high-value contract.
Balancing short-term and long-term needs.
Goldschmidt allows the Yankees to add value without losing long-term flexibility. He is anticipated to sign a short-term contract, which is consistent with the Yankees’ policy of avoiding significant commitments while keeping a competitive squad. Unlike other free agents with qualifying offers, Goldschmidt would not cost the Yankees any draft picks, making him a more appealing alternative.
The Yankees might be willing to offer him a one-year, $15 million contract with certain incentives.
