After two seasons at Texas, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell is transferring to LSU within the SEC.
According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, Mitchell announced his commitment to the LSU Tigers on Dec. 20, just four days after entering the transfer portal on Dec. 16. He played in nine games over two seasons at Texas, including five games in 2024, where he recorded four tackles, one tackle for loss, and two defensive stops. Four of those nine games were during his true freshman season in 2023, allowing him to retain a year of eligibility under the four-game redshirt rule.
The 6-foot-6, 350-pound defensive tackle reunites with defensive line coach Bo Davis at LSU, who previously coached him at Texas. Despite his potential, Mitchell struggled to find consistent playing time in the Longhorns’ defensive line rotation at nose tackle. He now looks to further develop his skills in the trenches at LSU.
A four-star prospect from Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey, Mitchell was ranked as the No. 205 overall player, No. 25 defensive lineman, and No. 3 recruit in New Jersey in the 2023 class by 247Sports Composite. He signed with Texas over offers from Georgia, Texas A&M, and Miami, standing out as Texas’s only defensive tackle signee in his recruiting class.
