The Hokies have the opportunity to make a bid for Virginia’s wide receiver who has entered the transfer portal.
The Virginia Tech football team is losing a lot of quality at wide receiver for the 2025 season. Last season, their top four receivers, Stephen Gosnell, Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton, and Ali Jennings, all confirmed their return for the 2024 season.
They were part of a large group of players retained by head coach Brent Pry, which also included quarterback Kyron Drones and running back Bhaysul Tuten. Jennings struggled with injuries during his two seasons in Blacksburg, but Gosnell, Felton, and Lane all played important roles in coordinator Tyler Bowen’s system.
Looking ahead to 2025, Virginia Tech will rebuild its receiver corps, but they do have some young promising players in Keylen Adams, Takye Heath, and Ayden Greene. This season, Greene has shown some potential when his name has been called in the offense. However, one thing is clear: the Hokies need to add a receiver or two through the portal with the younger kids, and their in-state opponent recently offered an intriguing way to enter the portal.
Virginia Tech should go after former Virginia WR Malachi Fields
Malachi Fields, a Virginia receiver, joined the transfer portal on Tuesday. He is an explosive player who can create plays all over the field. He was injured for the first few seasons in Charlottesville, but in the latter two years, when he was healthy, he was as good a receiver as anyone in the ACC. He accumulated 1,619 receiving yards and ten touchdowns. In his Cavaliers career, he has 1,849 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.
Is it a long shot for the Hokies to land Field? Probably, but given their current predicament, they should at least reach out to him and try.
Drones and Pop Watson will both return as quarterbacks, and their receiver core is currently young and in need of some seasoned leadership.
Pry and Bowen have done exceptionally well in the transfer portal in terms of finding success with wide receivers, and they must do it again. Fields is a player they should strive to recruit to Blacksburg for 2025, and he would be an excellent choice. This is Pry’s chance to make a splash in the portal.
