The New York Yankees have been busy to begin the offseason, and they show no signs of slowing. The Yankees added Cody Bellinger on Tuesday, after the trade for Devin Williams and the signing of Max Fried in free agency. While the pitching staff and lineup are gradually coming together, general manager Brian Cashman still needs to fill a few deficiencies. This begins with stealing Pete Alonso from the New York Mets across town. Team needs (as of December 18): 1B, 3B, and RP.
1B: Pete Alonso.
Alonso is unquestionably the best first baseman on the market. The Yankees have already expressed strong interest in him, and this does not look to be slowing down.
Cashman should have a bad taste in his mouth after Soto signed with the Mets and be willing to spend a bit more to bring Alonso to the Bronx. His contract will be worth around $150 million based on his market value.
3B: Nolan Arenado.
Cashman will need to make one more trade this summer to get Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals. Arenado has three years of control left, with an average annual worth of $17.3 million. In a hypothetical trade, the Yankees would send prospects Cade Smith (No. 12) and Zach Messinger (No. 18) to St. Louis. Arenado was not his former self last year, but there is hope he will recover.
RP: Tommy Kahnle.
The Yankees’ decision to bring back Tommy Kahnle makes a lot of sense. He’s 35 years old, but his 2.11 ERA from last season didn’t reflect that. The Yankees are constantly looking for bullpen help, and Kahnle is quite familiar with the Bronx. Bringing him back, even for lower-leverage circumstances, would strengthen and fill out the bullpen.
